Billy F Gibbons, (still) ZZ Top‘s guitar legend, plays the Volkshaus in Zurich on 29 June 2023 with his own band BFG.
After a short, but energetic, support set from Marc Amacher containing a few really cool cover songs, Billy arrives on stage at 8.30pm to a totally packed out, incredibly hot and sweaty, Volkshaus. The audience were certainly looking for a great night, and he delivered with a set mixed a bit over 50% ZZ Top, his solo work, and a couple of other covers thrown in – like ‘Foxy Lady’ by Hendrix.
Naturally, the ZZ Top songs got the bigger reaction from the crowd (opening with ‘Got me under Pressure’, through ‘Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers’, ‘Gimme all your Lovin’, ‘Sharp Dressed Man’, ‘Tube Snake Boogie’ and ending the evening with ‘La Grange’ – plus a few others).
An hour and a half set, interspersed with some interaction with the crowd – which actually responded pretty well by Swiss standards(!) – and Billy was giving it his all. There was no break/encore and he just went right on with no fuss.
A little after 10pm a happy bunch of (aged) blues/rock fans made their way home after a treat night in the Volkshaus Sauna with ZZ Top ringing in their ears.
